Prairie Cicada - Okanagana balli
James Woodworth Prairie, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA

Size: ~20mm
According to the website for James Woodworth Prairie here, this should be Okanagana balli. We're thinking this is a male. We're glad to finally have an Okanagana from Illinois.

Okanagana sp.
Very Cool!...but I'm not as familiar with members of this Genus.

Okanagana rimosa? likely occurs in IL
Gerry Bunker will better be able to id members of this group, as he has familiarity with them here in the eastern US - I'll forward this to him.

Okanagana balli
I believe your id of O. balli is correct. It is the only Okanagana genus known to exist at the James Woodworth Prairie.

Your specimen is too tauny and the eye color is wrong for O. rimosus and O. synodica is a more western species and is not as orange. O. synodica is more yellow and black than orange.

Here is a nice presentation on O. balli at the James Woodworth Prairie. Glad to see that this species is being protected.
