Hairy snout beetle - Myrmex floridanus

Hairy snout beetle - Myrmex floridanus
St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, USA
June 18, 2010
Size: 6 mm
The Florida beetle checklist (FSCA) lists three species of Myrmex--dichrous, floridanus, and myrmex. I found this Myrmex in an oak hammock in the central part of the Peninsula. This combination of range and habitat indicates the species is floridanus, a Florida endemic. This beetle can move very fast!
