We don't think it is either of those two species
This doesn't match the images for those species in Wagner, nor on BugGuide. Unfortunately we don't have a good resource for southwestern caterpillars at this time. If you can find a good resource, person, book, website, that would be most helpful. We're certain there is someone like Bruce Walsh who can just look at this and tell us what it is, but we haven't found that resource person for BugGuide yet, sorry :(

speyeri
Bob Carlson pointed out a record on purple aster and it looks to me like speyeri is more likely than convexipennis.
