P. harfordi and mantispid larva - Phanias harfordi - female

P. harfordi and mantispid larva - Phanias harfordi - Female
Stulsaft Park, Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, USA
June 25, 2010
Size: 6 mm plus 0.5 mm larva
I beat this adult female salticid from an oak tree. The epigynum and markings match my previous specimens of Phanias harfordi. I only noticed it under the scope later, but there is a first instar mantispid larva attached near the pedicel (it became detached in the preservative). Interestingly, this female was about 25% smaller than an unparasitized adult female of the same species I collected a few minutes later.
