Great camouflage - Cyclosa caroli - female

Great camouflage - Cyclosa caroli - Female
Okeechobee County, Florida, USA
June 8, 2010
The web of this caroli was attached to a low-hanging frond of a cabbage palm which was in a live oak hammock. The center of the trash line was just over a foot off the ground. She was so well camouflaged, that after I took a few photos of her and moved around to the other side of the web to try to photograph other views of her, I had to spend a couple of minutes trying to relocate her. I finally discovered she hadn't even moved from her original location in the trash line! In this image, the effect of the camera's flash helps to locate her in the center of the web. But note the dark leg-like "junk" about a spider's length above her. I have to wonder if she intentionally put it in the trash line.
