Elateropsis scabrosus? - Prionus imbricornis

Elateropsis scabrosus? - Prionus imbricornis
Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 27, 2010
Size: over 2 inches long
Discovered beetle on its back moving its legs wildly. When I righted it, it moved very rapidly. We have had abnormally hot weather for several weeks.

Prionus laticollis [E. sc. is restricted to s.FL & looks diff]

Yes
This is a good match.

Elateropsis?
Then there is a mistaken ID for that species in BugGuide: only one picture. It doesn't look at all like that beetle.

oh... i'll check
the beetle is kinda unique

no, BG's ID is fine and expert-checked
the photo's crappy, but shows enough do dispel any doubt

Prionus, but....
This is certainly *not* P. laticollis, but it is also not something I am familiar with.

I agree
Eric is right. definitely not laticolis. Elytra are too smooth and chestnut brown as opposed to black with fine reticulations. But the clincher is too many antennal segments. This is a female Prionus imbricornis.

thanks for setting me straight, Frank
i must abstain from messing with big ones...

Thanks, everyone!
Glad you pinned down this strange beetle (no pun intended)!
