Montague, Shasta Valley, north of Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou County, California, USA
Size: approx 5/8" or 1.8 mm
We have never seen one of these around before. I thought it looked like the Dascillus davidsoni on this site. It looks softer in person than it does in the photo. There are very few trees in this sparsely populated valley, mostly juniper, except in the small community areas and around isolated ranch houses. Mostly high desert, dryland, some areas irrigated for grazing.
Its jaws (or mandible) don't look like the borer-type beetles. It seems to have a head more like a grasshopper. When it flew onto my shoulder it sounded like a 6' wasp, but it hasn't displayed its wings since being put in the jar.

Nice find!
I'm moving to the species page because it is easier for me to look it up than to try and spell it:-)

Thank you for the ID!
Would you like me to send this one to you?
