Large Ant

Large Ant "Looking Thing" with stinger like a Scorpian in Oregon - Ocypus olens
Crow, Oregon, Lane County/Near Crow, Oregon (Eugene), Pacific Northwest County, Oregon, USA
June 18, 2010
Size: 1 inch or so
It has a stinger like a Scorpian that lifts and opens when it is threatened. The stinger was kind of greenish-white. I found it in the ground while I was digging an irrigation line about 18 inches deep. I wonder what it is?

Rove beetle.
Might be the "Devil's Coachhorse," Ocypus olens, an introduced species from Europe. This is *not* a dangerous animal. In fact, it is a valuable predator of pest insects.
