Small Coccinellid maybe Axion or Hyperaspis - Hyperaspis

Small Coccinellid maybe Axion or Hyperaspis - Hyperaspis
Montgomery County, Virginia, USA
June 28, 2010
Size: about 1/8"
My daughter was climbing a tree and found this small ladybeetle with "opposite" coloration. We've searched a little on the computer and ruled out Chilocorus stigma (it has a black abdomen, see later pictures). We think it might be Axion plagiatum. My daughter thinks it has a slight "rim" around elytra at the posterior end (flattened margins), although I can't see that myself. But we are thinking it could also be a Hyperaspis? We can't tell if the antennae have anything at the end. It's very small and we can't find our magnifying glass! The next photo will have a ruler in it for scale (marked in eighths of an inch).

Confirmed as Hyperaspis
Just heard back from the folks at the Lost Ladybug Project at Cornell (www.lostladybug.org), with the following message.
"This is one of the species in the Hyperaspis signata group, meaning that in Virginia there are three species of Hyperaspis (signata, binotata, and pistillata) that are indistinguishable externally."

Should I move this to frass, or is there any need for additional photos of the Hyperaspis signata group? They aren't very good quality.

keep the venter at least
I don't think we have any ventral images of Hyperaspis, that would be useful!
