Diptera; Abdomen, Thorax and EYES !!! - Turbopsebius sulphuripes - male

Diptera; Abdomen, Thorax and EYES !!! - Turbopsebius sulphuripes - Male
Clarion, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 25, 2010
Size: 5.8mm
Collected at light trap on leaf adjacent to sheet. Abdomen and thorax very round, covered in dense yellow hairs.
What passes as the head is deflexed and consists of two large eyes, with antennae. No discernable mouth parts or
other useful looking appendages. The right front leg is missing and the haltare shows as a small opaque/white
disk between the legs. I have no clue where to start looking for an ID on this strange guy. Any and all assistance appreciated.

Small-headed Fly (Acroceridae), maybe?
Bears at least a passing resemblance to Turbopsebius:

Might be something in that general vicinity, at any rate. Let's see what the experts have to say.

I agree.
That "thumb" on the costal margin of the wing is pretty diagnostic (though only for males if I recall correctly).

sure; i'll ask Dennis to chek
he knows this fascinating group well

Turbopsebius sulphuripes
No question about it! And as noted, a male. The "thumb" on the wing is a character in Turbopsebius and Pterodontia.

Turbopsebius
Thank you all very much. One of the strangest insects I've seen so
far.
