Hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus

Hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
July 1, 2010
Size: ~ 1"
It looked like a cranefly, and was the right size - about an inch long. But when it landed, it hung, and the wings were held tent-like over the back, which isn't how I usually see craneflies, and so I wondered if it was one of those hangingflies I've heard of. Looking at its face and comparing it to those here, it sure does look like one...

charming series!
Moved from Bittacus.

Thank you!
I was excited to see it. =)

i'm always tempted to call them 'hangover flies'... no reason
:]

They do look rather
like they've had better days...

they have every right, too
those better days must have been during late Mesosoic; whatever meager fauna we have now is just the relic of their past glory
