Spectacular photos, Suzanne & Werner!
I just received a response from Eric Fisher, and its worth quoting in full:
"Wow -- that is spectacular, with stunning photos! This is "Laphria" index - found across northern N. Amer. The quotes mean it is Laphria in the broad sense; actually a new genus is pending for this and related species (canis, etc.) -- which is more related to Choerades (used for more slender "Laphria" in Europe & Asia) than to Laphria in the strict sense (bumble bee-like species)."

Confirmed by Rob Cannings
Just received this email from Rob: "Your fly this time is Laphria index, which I've never seen in BC!! In fact, I've never seen any specimens from BC although there is an old record from Robson near Castlegar. I don't know if the specimen is still around; I haven't found it in any collection. The species is more common in Ontario, in my experience, although it ranges all across Canada. Our few specimens in the RBCM are all from Ontario. So, an excellent find, and a rare one."
