Smeared Dagger Moth - Acronicta oblinita

Smeared Dagger Moth - Acronicta oblinita
Town of Baileys Harbor, Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
June 6, 1999
Adult came to night light. ID made from specimen.

Acronicta longa
I believe this is actually Acronicta longa. This specimen has the black median edge at the inner margin which Covell, et al, states is diagnostic of A. longa, whereas that marking is not found on oblinita. You can see the marking more clearly in this CBIF image comparing the two.

Smeared Dagger
Dear J.D. This moth was identified, with specimen in hand, by the acknowledged Noctuid expert in the State of Wisconsin. He has often said that you cannot make a positive ID by looking at a photo. I'll stick with his decision. This specimen is held in either the State moth collection or in his private collection. Thank you for inquiring

Okay
Photo ID's tricky - often true. I didn't mean to offend you and put you on the defensive. Just noting some observations in the spirit of academic discussion. The PM line looks good for oblinita, but the black at the median inner margin and along the costa suggest otherwise, namely A. longa. Again ... not trying to offend.

Do you happen to still have the expert's contact info? I'm curious if he still has the genetalic slides for this specimen since the specimen itself is still in the collection. I've done many such slides in my day, and usually the institution hangs onto them. I'm hoping he'll have a photo of the slide available for review (Most of the dozen or so experts that I'm in regular contact with do). If you still have his name and contact info and can email it to me I would really appreciate it.
