Kay,
I believe this a California Forest Scorpion....Uroctonus mordax....but I am more than willing to be corrected by the experts....I was once told that the shinier the back, like this one means it is a female.

Thanks Michael - I saw that there were others in bugguide identified as Uroctonus mordax - but I don't know anything about scorpions, so worried about whether "forest" is necessary for the habitat. This was not in a forest, although there are eucalyptus trees nearby.
