Blinded Sphinx
This is Paonias excaecatus, the Blinded Sphinx Moth. I live in Washington CO. RI as well! Welcome to BugGuide!

Thank you!
i love your photos! I had never seen a moth like that til the other night, i hope to see some more luna's this year... i have only seen ONE & didnt have any of my cameras :[ The population has dropped [of luna moths] threw the past years.

Thanks!
I have come across blinded sphinx larvae around here occasionally and one adult last year. Lunas, I find, are fairly common if you know where to look and/or have a female to attract wild males. I think so far I alone have seen 2 lunas, a friend reported one nearby, and someone else I know reported 3 in the county north of Washington. I think they have dropped in population, but I feel as though they are making a come back.

Also if you ever want to find wild luna larvae in southern RI, I recommend checking Black Tupelo (Nyssa Sylvatica) as I find that to be their favorite host in RI.

(edit)Just found a blinded sphinx today!
