Hodges# 3722 Direct Sparganothis Moth - Sparganothis boweri

I found a very similar example
I thought it looked like C. directana and hadn't realized what a mess I'd stepped into. It looks quite different from what I've been calling S. boweri on Block Island.

They look very similar to some of the barcoded specimens in BIN AAD5369. BIN AAB7926, which includes all the barcoded C. directana specimens, is of no help; it includes a handful of representatives of several other Cenopis species. I'm starting to have an easier time reconciling this specimen with the other boweri I've photographed, but they do look quite different.

The Mess
By the time you check this, I may have already corrected MPG. Previously, all the boweri were misidentified xanthoides and Nolie's live images of directana were misidentified boweri per Michael Sabourin. He notes that females may not be identifiable.

S. boweri
Thanks for straightening this out, Steve.

Moved to Sparganothis directana
Moved from Sparganothis rubicundana.

For consistency with MPG and per Dr. Dombroskie's comments bellow, "... it may be best to leave it as an ambiguous directana...", I though it best to move this back. Sorry for the back and forth.

Tentative ID, see comments below.

Im not 100%, but I am leaning
Im not 100%, but I am leaning more towards S. rubicundana. I have a specimen that is very similar.

MPG Error?
I made a page for S. rubicundana and moved this image to it but I thought I should note that this image is shown at MPG as Cenopis directana, here, possibly due to the similarity to, among others, your own image at MPG on the same page.

I'll notify MPG but I thought I'd check to see if you had any other comments and also to ask if your image at MPG is correctly placed.

Steve, I think either way
Steve,

I think either way it should be tentative since I am only familiar with S. directana. I would want to dissect it to be absolutely certain. S. directana is much more common so it may be best to leave it as an ambiguous directana.
