The common name "Variable" vs. "Anicia"
depends on who's classification you follow. This is definitely of that group and not a Sagebrush Checkerspot. The name "Variable" was coined for the glob of names representing insects of greatly varied appearance that was created when
anicia, chalcedona, & colon
were all lumped together as if one species. The treatment followed here splits them up a bit more. As for subspecies, it may be a bit much to worry about them, but they are listed separately on BugGuide. This one is perhaps misplaced in subspecies
carmentis
, and perhaps should be subspecies
eurytion
, but based on the underside it looks more like the first to me. I don't think you were high enough up to have the
brucei
sorts. They all blend with one another, and it's pretty hard to draw lines between them. I'm not sure which is "supposed" to be at Creede, but the type locality of
carmentis
is just over the hump (admittedly a big hump) at Pagosa Springs.

Thanks,
for all the information, David! I was using the field guide, Butterflies Through Binoculars to try and ID, and they still use the Variable designation. Thank you for your quick help with a beautiful butterfly.
