Genus Baris? - Pissodes strobi
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA

The closest match I have found, using mostly color and markings, is Baris americana. Comments on the ID appreciated.

Pissodes maybe?
Far from positive, but it looks like one of the members of Pissodes (Northern pine weevil, White pine weevil, etc.). Anyone placing species names in this group is probably waving a magic wand when producing their id's.

Thanks, Donald!
I used your tip and found lots of Pissodes images, from France and Norway and Germany and Canada, with similar coloration and markings. I noticed they seemed to have striations or sculpting of the elytra. I was thinking mine had smooth glossy elytra, but maybe not, it's hard to tell from my photo taken on color negative film.

Don't know if pine is the only host. There is no naturally ocurring pine near me, but there is a grove of about a hundred planted pines about 3/4 mile way...

Thanks again for your help with this one!
