Smuckers - Mallodon dasystomus

Smuckers - Mallodon dasystomus
Duncanville, Dallas County, Texas, USA
July 8, 2010
Size: 35mm BL, 40mm w/ mandible
I got a call from my young bugging buddies saying they had found a beetle in a bucket on their back porch but apologizing because one antenna got broken when they scooped it into the jar. When I picked it up I heard the real story--they had tied a string to its leg and tried to let it fly. Their father is from Papua New Guinea and has doubtless regaled them with stories of his boyhood. I'm sure they felt that their American childhood has been deficient! Named Smuckers for the kind of jar it was in.
