Awful Photo of an Interesting Weevil - Conotrachelus anaglypticus
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
April 30, 2004
Size: Tiny
Yes, this picture is awful. This was my first day out with my new camera in 2004, and I guess I didn't have the hang of some of the complex features like "focus." The picture may also be bad because the weevil was so small, possibly the smallest weevil I've seen. I hesitate to translate that into millimeters.

Anyhow, blurry as it is, there are some interesting features here, including tall ridges on the elytra, and odd stringy things alongside the pronotum. I must admit I don't know if the latter is part of the beetle or some stray detritus.

Any comments appreciated.

Moved
Moved from Conotrachelus. Thanks for the ID, Don! Given the low quality of this photo, it can be frassed eventually, but it might be worth keeping for now as a West Virginia data point.

Molytinae: Conotrachelus anaglypticus
Done.

similar to plum curculio ...
... but probably is something else. See this page of plum curculio look-alikes.

Thanks
Joyce, Eric, Thanks for shedding some light on this odd weevil!

Conotrachelus.
Good call, Joyce. I was thinking the same thing:-) Conotrachelus is a very large genus.
