Huge wasp or hornet? - Cimbex americanus

Huge wasp or hornet? - Cimbex americanus
Balfour, West Kootenays, British Columbia, Canada
July 8, 2010
Is this a wasp or hornet? I don't know but it was about the size of my thumb!
Never seen one this big before! It was on the beach on it's back in the sand, I managed to get 2 photos before it slowly flew
high up into the trees...and I was still able to see it!
This was on the North Shore of Kootenay Lake, BC.

neither -- this is a 'sawfly', Cimbex americana
(1)
common across the northern part of the continent

Thank you! That was SO QUICK!
No wonder I couldn't find another like it (I wasn't looking at sawfly info).
Been living here over 12yrs & never seen one before.
I'll have to read up a bit (thanks for the link) & here I thought I'd found something really unusual :)

don't be discouraged -- keep looking & posting pix!
'unusual' stuff tends to...
...look like nothing in particular;
...be much smaller; and
...show up after you've familiarized with the 'usual' stuff

go ahead and photograph everything around -- that would be a start :))))

I'll continue taking pix
Thanks for the encouragement.
I tend to take pictures of everything, and bugs can be pretty cool.
I've got some other photos, I'll add as time allows.
Thanks again,
Angie
