Scavenger Scarab Beetle - Hybosorus illigeri

Scavenger Scarab Beetle - Hybosorus illigeri
Palm Springs, Riverside County, California, USA
June 24, 2010
Size: 7.5 mm
California data point - does anyone know whether this species has been recorded from CA? Unless I've overlooked a more recent paper, Ocampo (2002) reports H. illigeri in the United States from AR, AZ, KS, MO, NM and VA (see species page). I saw many of these scarabs crossing sidewalks between patches of turf.

Andy Cline just sent me this
Andy Cline just sent me this info:
"The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has 4 records of this species occurring in Imperial County."

Thanks for the input
I'm unfamiliar with the geography of the southwest. SBMNH confirms records from the Californian side of the Colorado desert; Palm Springs is in the northwestern corner. My guess is, perhaps we can expect to see H. illigeri appearing in CA lists soon...

not sure
Evans did an informal checklist in one of the Scarab newsletters (1992) that does not list it. Harpootlian (2001) said it goes west to TX, but I have seen in in AZ as early as 1994. Evans and Hogue (2004) in their Introduction to California Beetles, states H. illigeri is in Arizona and 'has recently been collected in the Colorado Desert' Not sure if that implies CA, or AZ across the border from CA?!? It sounds like they suspect it to be there (or almost there) but not official.
