Size: an inch or so
This has been on the side of our house for a few weeks. kind of shiny. At first I thought it was a wet bird dropping, but it looks like it must be some kind of egg case. Anybody recognize it?

Interesting--I've never seen tent caterpillar eggs that weren't surrounding a twig. The moth must have been confused by your lights. I also hadn't noticed before that their eggs are cylindrical, but I just verified that they are by zooming in on a photo I have of hatched eggs.

Just a comment -- not an ID -- Almost looks like a mass of eggs from a tent caterpillar moth.

well that would make a lot of sense as within 10 feet of these eggs i've found tent caterpillars, tent caterpillar moths, and a tent caterpillar cocoon!
