Bee or Wasp? - Pachodynerus erynnis

Bee or Wasp? - Pachodynerus erynnis
Venice, Sarasota County, Florida, USA
February 7, 2006
Didn't stay around very long to get good pics. About the size of the honey bees around it.

Moved

Pachodynerus erynnis, male (FL)
Looks very much like a male of this species. Some Euodynerus are similar.

Potter Wasp
I have been trying to photograph these for quite some time, and they are always too skittish to capture. Good shot!
Anyway, I believe it is a wasp, most likely a Eumenine potter wasp
So are you named after the famous Cuban/Scottish Yellow Fever researcher Carlos Finlay? If so that is cool (I study Medical Entomology).

You can see some more of my photos at triatoma.blogspot.com

Should I move it
to Pachodynerus erynnis?

?
Maybe. I was just using that as an example, and have no real skills with wasp species (Although our red-marked Zethus is definitely Z. slosssonae.

Thank you
I don't know how I missed it in the guide. I'm brand new at this and find it very hard with id's but am hooked on it. Never heard of Carlos Finlay :-) till now.

off topic but.....
In your illinos bird pictures: first unknown is a rufous-sided towhee, middle pic, yes they are kingbirds, and pic 100_8353 is a female rose breasted grosbeak.

As for your 3 unidentified birds folder. Your sparrow looks like a lark sparrow or maybe a lincolns sparrow hard to tell being behind a branch, the second is a northern parula, and in the 3ed you have from the left: a forsters tern, ring billed gull, sandwich tern, and a laughing gull.

And your birdwatching florida folder: rose-breasted grosbeak, it looks remarkably like a black-headed grosbeak, only they are a primarily western species. Unless that picture was taken in califonia then it probably is a R-BR GB.
Hope that helps,
-Gehan Gehale

Ps. I've been studing birds for 20 years and just started insects this summer. If you have any other un id'd bird photos feel free to let me know. I love a good challenge..

Would you please email me? I have a bird question and your email is not listed. Thanks!
