Robber Fly - Diogmites sallei

Robber Fly - Diogmites sallei
Carr Canyon, south of Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
July 10, 2010
These look different than the usual robber flies that I'm used to seeing, so thought I should file this under flies. These were abundant in the clearing I checked out this morning, with many dozens seen. Yesterday, same time and similar weather, none were seen. These are very agile, often hanging onto the vegetation with only one leg, even when holding prey.

Moved from Flies. Hanging by a leg sounds like Diogmites.

Diogmites sallei; nice photo!
