Diogmites sallei

Diogmites sallei
Carr Canyon, south of Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
July 10, 2010
After studying photos of this species from July 10, noticed several with prey had small flies in attendance. Not sure if these small flies are there for food or to lay eggs. Any ideas ?

Very interesting Dave! Severa
Very interesting Dave! Several families of small flies are attracted to predatory insects and spiders -- to share in juices from the prey. Milichiid flies are the most common of these visitors to predators (and robber flies are one of their favorite hosts). If you have a larger version of this image, it is possible that the little fly could be identified further. Great shot!

placed a cropped image of the small fly but the quality is not very good. Thank you Eric for your information.

Dave, I showed your cropped image to Irina Brake, who is the leading expert on Milichiidae, and she could not positively say it was this family -- based on the photo ("[probably] a milichiid, but could be a chloropid"). If possible, it would be really great to try to find these flies together again, and collect either a specimen or a more detailed photo. A real long shot, I know -- but the data from a complete ID would be most informative.
