Unknown Flying Insect - Homalodisca vitripennis
Dallas/Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, USA
July 12, 2010
I have gotten these bugs in past years all over my cucumber vines. They are as
elusive as cockroaches and scurry to the back side of the stem if I come near. I
got this photo by moving my finger to the back side until the bug came back into
view. They are about 3/4" long, and will fly if overly disturbed.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Moved provisionally, pending Dr. Hamilton's review.

Leafhopper
Reminds me of the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis):

Should be something in that vicinity, at any rate. Dr. Hamilton will be able to say for sure.

Please move your post here, so he'll see it faster.

I think this is the bug!
I have found one here that looks like this bug!
Smoketree Sharpshooter ~ Homalodisca liturata
But, the picture posted in this thread also looks like
mine...

I don't know how to move my picture

It's already moved.
Dr. Hamilton--our hopper expert--will make the final determination. That could take a few days, so sit tight and see where it finally ends up. :)

I've been told
that he wants hoppers placed in the Guide according to their tentative IDs. He will correct any errors.

Sorry, I'll butt out.

Don't ever hesitate to chime in, Ron!
We're the paraexperts, after all.

All I know is what I've been told to do (wish I could remember exactly who told me, but it was another editor). Anyway, I've been moving hoppers provisionally for a while now, and I haven't been yelled at yet, so I take that as a positive sign.

But keep the comments coming. After all, someone's got to keep me honest--and your input is much appreciated!

Draft on where to post should be revised to reflect this. (I was going off the article and personal experience.)

Article here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/298899

Well, I found a lengthy article on this insect:
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7492.html

And after reading it, I am sure it is a Glassy-winged sharpshooter - (Homalodisca vitripennis) rather than a smoke-tree sharpshooter I mentioned earlier, the difference is in markings on the head.

Thanks for all the help!! :)

I agree.
Things seem to have changed since that article was drafted. Or maybe I'm just too willing to follow bad advice. :)
