Those are quite the flowery epaulets on this insect. What is it, please, and what is the purpose of the adornments? It is merely for camouflage?

This is a male crabro, the enlarged front legs have species specific patterns, and they cover the eyes of the females while mating... Also they have sometimes grooves in which the female antennae fit and they can secret some pheromones in there.. Bees of the genera Xylocopa and Megachile have similar structures...
