Not a derm*estid larva! - Polyxenus lagurus Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA February 10, 2006 Size: 2 mm approx.
I noticed a bunch of fuzz in the bottom of the clear plastic deli container, and also the absence of one of the two tail tufts this little guy had at the outset. Eventually I got the idea that he lost them on purpose. They might be defensive hairs that irritate a would-be predator, and he figured he was under attack.
If anyone has read or heard of such a thing, please comment.
