Unknown - Eichlinia cucurbitae

Unknown - Eichlinia cucurbitae
Brookville, Ohio, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA
July 14, 2010
Size: about 1 inch to 1.25 inch
This bug with wings was competing with Great Northern Bumblebees, honeybees, bottle flies and other insects for nectar at the Provence Lavender bush/flower in my backyard. It is always swamped with insects in June and July and even in August and in all the years I have watched the insects gather at this bush I had never seen this one before today. It has almost transparent wings, something like a hummingbird moth or a hawk moth. And there is some green color on the shoulders.

Squash Vine Borer, Melittia cucurbitae
It truly is this. Someone also suggested a clearwing moth but I have seen those and this is different. I looked for Squash Vine Borer, Melittia cucurbitae, and found it all over the place. Thanks so much.
