Fly with Black & White Banded Legs - Xylota

Fly with Black & White Banded Legs - Xylota
East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
July 14, 2010
Size: 8-10mm
These flies were all over the leaves of Deinanthe bifida in my garden. It's blooming right now and the flies had pollen on them but I never saw them on the flowers.
They kept roving back & forth across the leaves, pivoting from the rear so that it looked like only the front moved. Then they would stop, and after a few seconds start the
routine again. It started to pour before I got more pictures.

Thanks for the confirmation & move
I didn't realize this was sitting in Syrphidae so long. I didn't have the confidence in my ID to move it further and then I forgot about it.

looks like a Syrphid Fly
Maybe like this Xylotini

or possibliy like this Myolepta

Thanks, both seem reasonable...
I'm a bit more partial to Xylotini, I think.

See the comment that goes with this picture. It describes the behavior I mentioned.
