Lucanus placidus - female

Lucanus placidus - Female
City garden with sandy soil, Central Minnesota County, Minnesota, USA
June 16, 2005
Size: unknown
This striking shot of a female shows the beautiful golden patches on the front femora, which are so characteristic of all Lucanidae species, and some other Coleoptera, but that is another story... They are in fact golden hairs, called chaetae, I think.
Does anybody out there know what their function is?
