Camponotus impressus. Also known as Colobopsis impressa and several other names. This is a small carpenter ant relative, exclusively arboreal and nocturnal, so though fairly common in SE USA, rarely seen. Funny head shape is used to block the entrance to the nest, in a hollow twig.
