Moved from Physoconops bulbirostris.

Apologies, Dan. I erred earlier when placing this as P. bulbirostris. I now believe it's P. brachyrhynchus. The two species can appear quite similar (particularly in the case of the darker, less colorful forms, of P. brachyrhynchus like this one).

In P. bulbirostris the solid black marking of the frons covers nearly its entire area, extending downward from the top of the head all the way to roughly the horizontal level just above the bases of the antennae....which isn't the case here. Also, the pleural pollinose stripe occupies only the lower portion of the side of the thorax in P. bulbirostris , whereas in P. brachyrhynchus it reaches all the way to the upper edge of the thorax (which appears to be the case here, though that may be photo glare in front of the wing base).

Moved
Moved from Subgenus Pachyconops.

The length of the 3rd antennal segment indicates this is in subgenus Pachyconops, and as such the only species that fits well is P. bulbirostris.

This is a male, from the absence of a theca (which is quite large in female bulbirostris).

Moved from Physocephala.

A close look at the right wing, together with the very long 3rd antennal segment, and the relatively uniform width of the hind femora...indicate Physoconops here.

a fly, rather; Conopidae, prob. a Physocephala
