Rabbit Bush Beetle - Zonitis vermiculata

Rabbit Bush Beetle - Zonitis vermiculata
In Westwood; elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
July 26, 2004
Size: Body length 9.5mm
This is a live "scan" of one of several of these beetles that I observed on some Rabbit Brush bushes (Chrysothamnus nauseosus) in the old mill site in Westwood. These beetles would "drop" off when I attempted to reach into the bushes to catch one. I could not find them within the ground litter below! I finaly did catch this one by catching it from below, with a small container, as it dropped off and into the container. (the date reminds me that I should return to this location - perhaps I shall find another specimen for an updated "camera" photo.)

J.D. Pinto: "Must be Zonitis vermiculatus Schaeffer
"...I can't see all features for species ID, but based on location I don't think it can be anything else."

so it's new species for the guide, Jim -- thank you so much!

Moved from Nemognathinae.

Thanks V
I went out to the location where I got this beetle. Plenty of rabbit brush, but no more of these beetles. I will try again when the bushes bloom!

much appreciated
i expect the adults to have a rather narrow slot of activity, season-wise, so it may take several visits to figure out when exactly are they out

hope Dr Pinto gives us a name beyond subfamily
nice one -- going back there at this time and posting more pix sounds like a great idea

Moved from ID Request.
