Duskywing, but...
The white fringes on the hindwings suggest Funereal Duskywing, Erynnis funeralis. Illinois DNR's Field Guide to skippers doesn't show a record north of Saline County. Good find!

Thanks, that's good to know!
I wish I'd been able to get some better shots, but this little creature was really in a hurry. I'll be watching during upcoming weeks to see if there's a trend here, or if it was just an odd stray. Lepidoptera is having a great year in the northwest Chicago suburbs.

That is a terrific find!

Dumb luck, sorry to say
I was tracking a male green darner, which would not land long enough for me to get a good shot. I almost skipped this skipper, because I thought it was another indigo duskywing -- and I've already gotten lots of good pics of them. Fortunately, I have a soft spot for duskywings, and decided to shoot it. And psweet, thanks for the info on the IDNR Field Guide to Skipper Butterflies of Illinois. Didn't know it existed, and just got ahold of it!
