Stripy - Cimbex americanus

Stripy - Cimbex americanus
Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin, USA
July 8, 2010
I have asked a few sites and so far no one know what type of caterpillar this is. It has made a cocoon now so we are hoping to see the butterfly/moth come out :) any info would be great

Thanks,
K

Rearing results?
Hi Kelly: did you have any success rearing this Cimbex? The colouration is so distinctive, and I'm not sure how this form came to be associated with C. americana. I'm curious to see if the adult is in any way different.

WOW
looks just like it but a pretty light orange. How bad are these guys?

Hmmm....
I'm not convinced it's a caterpillar. I think it may be some sort of Sawfly larvae. I have been fooled by them before! The eyes seem to suggest it. Someone with more knowledge can tell you more, but I really don't think you'll see any sort of moth or butterfly come out of it.

yes
A sawfly of some sort, unfortunately that cocoon will only hatch to be a fly.

Hymenoptera
Not a fly (related to bees and wasps)

Yes
Thanks for the clarification, gotta love common terms, you say tomato I say tomahto...

Thanks
I never thought it could be something like that. My son will be happy whatever it is. He loves all bugs
