I'm not sure if I've considered all the options,
but another likely candidate might be D. semicincta.

Having a young person enjoying this with you is great. It's always wonderful to see the fascination and newness of it all reflected in them. My kids are still pretty young, and I am having the same enjoyment with them; something of a second childhood getting see them experience for the first time what I did forty-some years ago.

I'm not expert at identifying Diceroprocta,
but I think there are a few look-alike species, and that seeing the parts at the end of the abdomen clearly (expecially for female) and operculae (male) are very helpful in pinning down the species. Having said that, it certainly looks like D. apache just in general appearance.

Thanks Dave. Someday I'll have enough info in my head to know what to photograph. But until then I shoot and hope. Find it difficult to get meaningful measurements too. If it wasn't for experts like you I certainly would have given up already. My grandson and I are having a blast cataloging all the critters in our yard.
