wine red ladybug - Anatis labiculata

wine red ladybug - Anatis labiculata
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 19, 2010
Size: ~6mm
Large lady beetle -- think we've got this one ID'd correctly.

yes, an old one!
When the two most similiar Anatis spp., A. labiculata and A. mali get very old, they can be so dark the spots are obscured; however, A. mali still retains the vestiges of the paler spot outlines. Also, this may not be scientific, but all the old A. mali I've seen have been a very dark red-brown, while all the old A. labiculata have been red-purple like this one.
