Hitching a ride - Hadrotettix trifasciatus - female

Hitching a ride - Hadrotettix trifasciatus - Female
Tierra Grande, Valencia County, New Mexico, USA
July 18, 2010
Size: about 40 mm
This one is mostly just for fun.

Was driving home along the dirt road and this one flew up onto the hood. For the first few miles it walked around on the hood as if we weren't even moving (and the hood was HOT - air temp 103F and the hood I would think was hotter than the ground, but maybe not). The kids were loving it. Dylan set the camera on the dash and took a few photos. We clocked up to 45 mph without even phasing her. Her antennae didn't even bend back all that much. The speed at the instant of this shot was around 25 mph.

So, David, did you buy a red vehicle to attract insects?
Red - particularly metallic - and black are the preferred colors, according to some secondary research I did a few years back. At the time, I owned a red mica RX-8 dubbed The Mazda Theatre for Performing Insects.

A fun series; thanks for posting.

Just happened to be the color they had at the auction :0)
Wouldn't have been my first choice, but the bugs do seem to like it. Swallowtails and Pierids are attracted to it like crazy in wooded areas, and sometimes Wasps and Bees. Not sure if the Grasshoppers pay attention or not, but this one sure decided to travel the lazy way!
