Ant or Termite?

Ant or Termite?
Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
July 21, 2010
Size: .5 inches
Last night during the beginning of a rainstorm we noticed hundreds of these insects flying up from the stones in our front yard. I informed my wife that they were either ants or termites. Would you please identify this insect for us.
The ones showed in the photo submitted has lost its wings.
Thanks
RL Richie
