Looks like it was nectaring on the dogbane
Apocynum androsaemifolium
. That's a milkweed relative, and when in flower, a nectariferous bug magnet!!

The "Greater Fritillaries" - genus
Speyeria
are larger and all have rounded pale spots (usually silvered, sometimes pearly white or yellowish) on the under hind wing. They are very closely related.
