Diapheromera covillea - Diapheromera covilleae - female

Diapheromera covillea - Diapheromera covilleae - Female
n. side of Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
September 9, 2009
Size: approx. 85 mm
Brought this girl home, and she produced an abundance of eggs. She is the mother of the nymphs that will be posted later.

It is interesting that I have an easy time finding males of this species, yet females are very difficult. Generally (when adult) the males are found sitting on the outer branches, often on the foliage. The females tend to be sitting along branches inside the bushes, which they greatly resemble, and are much more difficult for me to see. Easiest, of course, when a pair is joined; then they don't blend in nearly as well as when they are alone.
