Crucian spider - Latrodectus hesperus - female

Crucian spider - Latrodectus hesperus - Female
Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
February 3, 2006
Size: ~1"
I found this spider in my apartment in Las Cruces. She'd apparently had a male around recently, too, given the small spiderlings nearby. Apart from this one, the only arachnid residents of my apartment I've noticed have been black widows...

Ooooooooooooh!
That's bad. The only arachnid residents of your apartment are, ::Gulps:: Black Widows?! Have you ever got bitten before?

Nope...
Haven't been bitten (yet). I haven't seen as many around in the last few months, but they're pretty good at staying in their corners out of my way. I just need to check before reaching under furniture and so forth.

This
one is also a black widow, L. hesperus. It is a juvenile.

juvnile brown widow
That's a brown widow not black.

Thanks for the ID!
I'd been thinking it looked widow-like except for the coloration. Always fun to have black widows breeding in the apartment, too. Maybe I ought to do something about that...
