Hi! I am new to "Buguide". I just got a new panasonic ZS6 camera. I have found I love this type of photography but know little about insets. Love your site and wondered if you could help me identify this little guy. I think it is a species of a flower fly? Picture was taken near my home in trout Run, PA

Wonderful!
Excellent work, Joel, on getting our first Geron to species. Thanks for all your accomplishments today.

Bet we have a bunch of these.

Also, bee flies often have long beaks while flower flies rarely or never do.

size refers to the insect body, not image
this looks like a bee fly [fam. Bombyliidae] -- others will give you a more specific ID

Yes, a bee fly - Geron sp.
These are typically fuzzy. Flower flies aka syrphids aka hover flies are more likely to have smooth bodies, though there are many exceptions.
