Cuterebra lepivora ovipositing - Cuterebra lepivora - female

Cuterebra lepivora ovipositing - Cuterebra lepivora - Female
Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, California, USA
July 24, 2010
This female buzzed along the trail ahead of me, stopping from time to time on low-growing ruderal vegetation. The photos show her to have been laying eggs. The habitat adjacent to the trail consists of coastal sage scrub with considerable stands of Opuntia. Although rabbits are this fly's host, woodrats live in the cactus pathces, so other Cuterebra species could be present. The trail is at an elevation of 1050 feet above sea level, bordered on the inland side by a residential tract.
