Ant patroling the Queen Anne's Lace -
Formica pallidefulva
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
July 30, 2010
Size: 5.9 mm
This ant is getting a good stretch on its left back lack as it moves from floweret to floweret on the Queen Anne's Lace.

Formica sp. (pallidefulva group) - worker
Unfortunately, I'm unable to tell apart the three most widespread species of this group (F. pallidefulva, F. incerta and F. dolosa) from a picture.
But Dr Trager could well know better.

F. pallidefulva
In that region (the US mid-Atlantic southward), the other two species would be considerably lighter and redder in color. Farther north, these distinctions are not as reliable, though.
