Robber fly? - Laphria asackeni - male

Robber fly? - Laphria asackeni - Male
El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, California, USA
July 30, 2010
Size: ~12 mm
First thought this was a horse fly, but I'm now more inclined toward robber. It landed on some dried grass in the sun (about 80 F temperature) but was pretty lethargic: I encouraged it to crawl onto my hand; it sat there for a minute or two and then flew away.
