100's of caterpillars - Datana integerrima

100's of caterpillars - Datana integerrima
Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri, USA
August 1, 2010
Size: 1 1/2 inches
These caterpillars had ravaged a tree in out timber. There were literally hundreds of them. They were all concentrated in this ball-like mass at the base of the tree. The leaves were striped from tree and I have no idea whet kind of tree it was. Any ideas on the identity of these little munchers?

Yes I clicked the image, and
Yes I clicked the image, and they look almost identical. I am going to say Walnut caterpillars is a match

Any possibility it was a walnut?
You can tell by the dark fractured bark (and the walnuts on the ground under it!) See

There were definitely walnuts
There were definitely walnuts on the ground in this general area. The leaves were completely striped from the tree. I did some looking around on bugguide and asked a couple of insect friends and they are leaning towards walnut caterpillars, I assume you are thinking the same thing?
