Gray Fishfly - Neohermes californicus - Male
Junction Hwy's 36 and A21 in Westwood by outdoor light; elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
July 16, 2010
Size: 57mm nose to wingtips
A really nice find; the first of its kind for me in this region.

The info page was quite helpful and interesting. Thanks!

Apparently there are only two species in the west: Neohermes filicornis and Neohermes californicus. But I'll need an expert to help decide between the two. Thanks for any help in this regards!

Thank you V for the new Guide page for this insect
... and for all that you do here on the BG!

Neohermes californicus
By distribution, this is almost certainly Neohermes californicus. N. filicornis is found in the Coastals from Northern to Southern California then over to Arizona and New Mexico. N. californicus is found throughout the Sierra Nevadas and northward. If you want to know for sure, take a photo of the male terminalia in lateral view. There are several papers which have both species figured, but the easiest to obtain may be Flint (1965).

I caught three N. californicus males here in the Sierra foothills (western slope) over the weekend so they are out and about.

Hope this helps,
Brady

Flint, O. S., Jr. 1965. The genus Neohermes (Megaloptera: Corydalidae). Psyche 72(3):255-263.

Thanks Brady for the helpful comments on the distribution of these two Neohermes species!
